I must have spoke too soon.
2 nights ago, just a few hours after I wrote my last blog, I started to have some regular Braxton Hicks contractions. Nothing too concerning, because I get them all the time. But they started to come more often and while I was laying down. A few of them started to hurt which in my mind meant maybe they were becoming more than just a Braxton Hick. I drank a ton of water, and was feeling so tired, so I was hoping sleep would help. I woke up a few times in the night for my usual bathroom trip, and both times I woke up I was still having the contractions. In the morning, as soon as I woke up, I had one. After talking to Wes about it, we decided that if they continued through the morning I should give my doctor a call. Since I have a history of preterm labor, she has warned me that if I have more than 6 Braxton Hicks an hour, I need to be seen. So we started our morning, and I was having between 4-6 an hour. I took a nice long shower to see if that would help anything, and it didn’t. I decided I should just call and hopefully get some advice from my doctor. She was in surgery for the morning, and the nurse I spoke to recommended that I head on over to the hospital for monitoring, especially with my history.
Wes was at work, so my Dad came over to watch Camden and my Mom took me to the hospital. They got me all set up on the monitors and my contractions were pretty minimal. I was glad they weren’t doing too much, because that meant that hopefully it was nothing and maybe the painful contractions I had the night before were nothing. Well about an hour after watching my contractions they came in to check me to make sure I hadn’t dilated with all my previous contractions. That is where the problem came. I am 34 weeks, and I was dilated to a 2 and 50% effaced. They said it can be normal to already be just a tad dilated at this stage, especially with your second baby. However, after they checked me, I got up to use the restroom, and when I got back in bed my contractions started up again. This time they were all 5-8 minutes apart. I knew as soon as I started to feel them come on that the nurse would be back in, she would give me a terbutaline shot, and they would most likely send me home on bed rest.
I was right.
They gave me the terb, and I had another contraction a few minutes later, then they stopped. She said the terb should stop them pretty instantly and relax my uterus for at least an hour. Well it did work, but only for about 45 minutes. Then my contractions started up again, but this time they were about 10 minutes apart. They said 10 minutes apart is normal, since I am allowed to have 6 an hour. After speaking to my doctor they said I would be sent home and be put on strict bed rest for the next 2 weeks. They want me to get to 36 weeks before little Grayson is allowed to be born.
So now I am supposed to stay off my feet, basically all day. I totally understand why, because any time I am up doing things, my contractions start again. I know bed rest is not going to be easy, especially with a toddler on my hands, but I know it will be so much easier than having to have Grayson in the NICU for a few weeks.
Thankfully Wes has only 4 half days of work next week, so he will be home with Cam and I a lot. While he is gone, my amazing, and always willing to help Mom will come hang out with us. I think the first week will go by pretty quickly. And the second week I know I will just be counting down my days to freedom.
I guess there are some women who always have their babies early. It looks like I might be one of them. Camden was born at 37 weeks, and I have a funny feeling that Grayson will be too. I see my doctor on Thursday this coming week, so I am curious what she will tell me, and if she will really let me off bed rest after only 2 weeks.
Anyways, since I will have more down time now, I am sure I will write a few more blog updates on the other things going on in our lives.
