Careless Mommy Mistakes

So far I think I have successfully made 3 pretty careless mistakes being a mommy. These are just simple brainless things I have done, and I am sure blaming it on "mommy brain" is not a good excuse.

The first one was when Camden was just a few weeks old. I was carrying him in the house while Wes got the stuff out of the car. Since I was the first one in I had to turn off the house alarm. I walked through the door and and was reaching for the alarm right when the door started closing (automatically). Our little dog Sassy took off to run out. This is the door out to our garage and it is VERY heavy! So trying to save Sassy's life before the door crushed her, I leaned backwards to stick my foot in the door. It just so happens that my foot was not as far out as Camden's head was, so before my foot stopped the door, Camden's head stopped it! He did that silent cry at first, which scares every mom, then it turned in to a full out cry! I was so sad, I was crying! Wes came in the house and was very curious as to what happened. I told him and he thought Camden would be ok. And sure enough, after a few good cries, Camden settled down and he was ok. Never a bump or a bruise, thank goodness! Next time, sorry Sassy, if you are dumb enough to run through a closing door than you deserve to get hit with it!

The second Mommy brain thing I did was a few weeks ago. I took Camden to Costco with me. We made our Costco run and he was great! I normally go to Costco with Wes so I can handle the cart and stuff while Wes hangs on to Camden. This time I was all alone. So I got to the car to pack everything in. I started up the car, and put Camden in his car seat. After loading our car with the goods I got in and drove home. Well I got home and went to take Cam out of his car seat and...he was not strapped in!!!! In my genius way of thinking I thought I would set him in his car seat while the car cooled off and I packed everything in...then of course I would strap him in before we took off. Apparently I forgot my own plan and drove all the way home with my baby not strapped in to his seat. I began thanking God for bringing us home safely even though I was careless with my actions! Let me just say that I always check now to make sure I have secured him to his seat before I drive away.

Then this happened today...This picture looks pretty cute huh? Nothing wrong with it, right? Wrong! So being the great mom that I am I took Camden with me to Target. We were in the fitting room and he kept trying to sit up, so I helped him sit up in his stroller and he began chatting and checking himself out in the mirror. Super adorable! Well if you can see, he once again is not strapped in, the foot rest is down (it could be up), and Camden is still pretty small, so he can fit under the tray and slide out of the stroller...can you guess what happened?? A minute after I snapped this adorable picture and sent it to Wes, I grabbed a cute dress to try on right when Camden arched his back and stiffened his legs. I turned to see my baby sliding out of his stroller right on to the ground. I grabbed him just before he completely hit the ground. Thankfully he didn't get hurt, but it did scare him a little bit so we had a few tears. I once again learned my lesson. Put the foot rest up so he can't slide out (duh, that is what it is for) or buckle him in!! Let's just say it shook me up a bit, so I didn't even try on the cute dress and we left the fitting room without wanting anything I took in with me.

I think as a Mom you are always learning ways to be a better Mom. After my experience today I have learned that I need to pay more attention and not let my careless actions keep resulting in potentially dangerous situations. I am so thankful that each thing I have done has caused minimal damage...from now on I am going to wrap Camden in bubble wrap just in case!

I love this post because I can totally relate! When Kaiden was 3 months, I had him laying next to me for just a few minutes one morning when I rolled over to grab my cell phone. It that split second facing the other way, Kaiden rolled off the other side of our very high bed and fell onto the floor. He was swaddled too, so it made it even worse! Then when Kaiden was 9 months, he drank an entire bottle of Infant Tylenol when he retrieved it out of his diaper bag and opened the CHILD PROOF cap (we had him open several other child proof caps to make sure and sure enough, he can open them!). Where was I when this all took place? On facebook. Lovely.

Um, I have done everything you named too! Oh my! I love that you shared these. Ya know what? I was thinking about you today and I was thinking about what a natural transition you have had to motherhood- like, I see other mothers really struggling as first time moms, (I did too), and you are such a natural :). I think this means you are meant to make LOTS of babies. I love that you are blogging more and sharing more of your already developed mommy wisdom. :)

One time in Walmart, Christina and I were looking for some candy, and both turned our backs on McKay in his stroller. When we turned back around, the stroller was empty. PANIC MODE. Of course, it took only milliseconds to realize he was lying on the ground, flat on his back, smiling up at us. We are still not sure how he pulled that off, but we definitely double check the straps now...
